All India Survey on Higher Education 2019-20, by the Union Ministry of Education, notes: “Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in Higher education in India is 27.1, which is calculated for 18-23 years of age group.”
Paraphrasing, only about a fourth of our youth population makes it to higher education. Regional and socioeconomic differences pile on over and above this.
This is distressing news. It is also a cause for stirring action.
And there’s some hope: research suggests that a 1% increase in access to higher education has the same positive effect on growth as a 13% increase in adult literacy levels.
