Youth For Ensuring Access To Quality Education For All (YEFA)

Core Philosophy

YDF envisions Empowered Youth as the change agent. YDF's mission is to create a facilitating platform for the youth to recognize, appreciate and support true sense of voluntarism and to be the change agent by sheer display of committed initiatives. YDF started with a mandate to work for youth and youth led activities. The goal is to work for holistic development through youth led initiatives. However, these activities are mostly on issues of elementary education, community health and local self governance led by youth.

Our Commitment to Ensure Quality Education for All

YDF has been working on the issues of "Right to Quality Education" campaign for a long time. While, it has been mostly working with government and non-government organizations on community led processes in ensuring quality education. Apart from that we have been supporting schools in slums of Bhubaneswar in terms of books, contact classes for English and mathematics and computer education. We have volunteered with Pratham to work on summer camps, educational training programmes in two districts of Odisha namely Mayurbhanj and Khurda district. Our experience shows that while it is important to work with state on the fundamental governance issues in education, we need to have community initiatives for education that empowers the community.

Strengthening Rural Education

The reason behind starting this present initiative named "Mayurbhanj Public School" in association with "Educate to Empower" is to set an example in the country in community school domain. We have been mostly focusing and reaching out to deprived and disadvantaged communities, who did not have basic facilities of education by creating opportunities to enable them to create first generation learners who have made it to transforming their lives. It is also a facilitating platform and consortium of civil society organizations and individuals working with communities on education and governance issues at the grass root level.

Capacity Building of CSOs on RCFCE Act, 2009

We are organizing seminars, workshops, discussion among the CSOs on Right to Education and related issues for effective participation in ensuring quality education for every child.

Our Approach

Civil Society Organisations have long played a crucial role in bridging the gap in universalisation of primary education in the state. As on date, more than 3000 private unaided schools which are run by various NGOs, Trusts and Foundations exist in the state. Apart from running full-fledged day boarding and residential schools, they are also engaged in various educational extension programmes supported by various funding agencies and public fund raising. They not only supplement government initiatives but also cater to educational needs of the children of the state. With this objective in mind, we aim to aware the CSOs the perspectives and provisions as laid down by the RCFCE Act, 2009 and the roadmap for a facilitative engagement with the government in effective implementation of the Act in the state.

Ongoing Programme

RtE Watch- A monthly e-magazine to get an update of the RtE implementation in the state. This helps the advocacy groups and NGOs to build up pressure on the government to fulfill the commitment as per the act. White paper on Status of Right of CWSN to Education in Odisha- A white paper is under preparation to highlight the provisions made by the government with respect to their access to education. The aim is to identify challenges and gaps in ensuring the right of CWSN. Youth for Ensuring Access to Quality Education for All - A campaign has been launched to sensitise young people on RtE and RTI to improve the educational governance which will help achieve universalisation of primary education with quality. As part of the process, district level youth forums involving rural and urban youth, students from colleges, universities and schools are being formed to volunteer for the cause of RTI and RtE. School Support Initiative YDF has taken up a massive school support programme in partnership with Educate to Empower and various corporate houses. The support includes setting up of library, providing students? kits, books, computers, Content Support and Teachers' training. We are also mentoring low budget private schools in terms of academic and other inputs for quality education.
